Another year, another decision as to what outfit I should wear to my birthday celebrations.
Some people feign modesty over their birthdays: “Oh just a small dinner, a few friends, nothing too extravagant.” Fools, that’s what I say. This is the one date in the year that attention-seeking behaviour is totally justified, as opposed to my daily annoying demands for everyone to look at me. Then, I am a Leo and, bowing to stereotype, I do like to be made a fuss of and to queen it up at any opportunity.
And birthdays are the perfect opportunity to pile on the glamour and encourage complete carnage. I feel that I’ve failed if there hasn’t been at least one affair sparked during the evening, or at least a little bit of drunken weeping followed by lots of dancing upon restricted surfaces. I have high expectations of low behaviour from my friends and acquaintances.
For this year’s birthday ensemble I’m planning to wear a dark purple Red or Dead corset dress. Since dying my hair dark, I’ve found the best colours for brunettes are purple and green, and these have become new favourites in my wardrobe. This makes for great shopping opportunities, as there are so many gorgeous shades of purple appearing on shoe shop shelves.
Of course, all this planning of outfits is just for the benefit of the first hour or so of the evening. By 10pm, my make-up will be smudged, my shoes thrown into a corner and either I will rip my dress clambering on to a table or someone will stain it with their tears. Now that’s what I call a good night out.
