While London melted last week, I was breathing in the fresh air of Somerset. It was a happy coincidence that I ran away to the countryside just before the city started to sweat.
The reason for the break was to avoid heading back into work following a weekend at The Glade festival, where I was hooked up to a bottle of Absolut vodka in order to keep going through 48 hours of electronic beats. The thing with growing older is that the spirit is still willing to dance in a field for hours, but the body’s recovery time is extended from hours to days.
So I headed off to the village of Porlock, staying at Lower House Farm, where I did very little apart from work off the best fried bread I’ve ever tasted with a stroll by the beach or to the cute shops. Now I’m back, refreshed and ready for the rest of summer. And, thanks to the glorious British sunshine I’ve got a light tan, so I’m booking myself in for a manicure and pedicure in celebration of managing to avoid dark circles under my eyes and that slightly manic look you get from greeting the dawn three days running.
However, I am keen to avoid the WAG look, so I’m following the excellent advice given to me by Anna Tsankova, from Beautopia manicurists, at a Leading Hotels of the World launch a couple of weeks ago. The kind people from the Leading Hotels group, which really knows how to administer rest and recuperation with fabulous spas housed in its very fabulous hotels, treated guests to a manicure by Anna’s award-winning team.
Anna has worked with Gina shoes and Moschino, and recommends going for a natural look this summer, with pale pinks very much in favour. I’ve bought a couple of pairs of new sandals and it’s only fair to them to make my toes as pretty as possible. I’m thinking of debuting my silver Carvela wedges at the V&A’s Village Fete this Friday. Only, at this village fete there won’t be any cream teas, which is possibly a good thing since I did eat one every day for my lunch while on holiday.
There is still plenty of good weather predicted to come offering an excellent excuse to flash pretty toes in sandals. With Kurt Geiger having a fabulous sale on now, it’s a good time to stock up on new styles.
